Finally “ME TIME” The 2 year old baby and the 36 year old Hubby baby have fallen asleep I actually get the chance to sit relax and post a blog….WOWWEEE… mind you the dirty dishes are still in the sink and my sons toys are all over the living room floor.. anywayyyyy
I just wanted to share my delight on my sons’ language skills he just turned 2 last month so as you can imagine he is starting to become such a chatter box the reason why I am so delighted is because he is speaking two languages!! From the day he was born let me not say even sooner I pondered on the following;
Should I speak to him in our native language?
Will it affect his ability to learn English?
If I tend to speak to him in English, will he lose his native language?
After many debates with myself and the Husband (who felt English only was the way to go). I decided I wanted him to speak our Native language I spoke to him in Greek only. Searched for Greek books, DVDS, and Nursery Songs although I purchased a few products I quickly saw the scarcity of them all. Giving up on the Internet searches and asking friends I would just Translate English books in to Greek and constantly explain everything to him in Greek even with Television.
So now I sit back and reflect on my day. Today my son spoke to me in English telling me he was thirsty and wanted water he then later informed me in Greek that he is tired and he would like to go to bed. I just can’t believe at one point I was second guessing if I should even bother teaching him our Native Language. I feel so proud for him and myself!
